Combining RISC OS and Linux in a single FAST system The ECOS 5 is an internally mounted companion computer designed to work alongside a RISC OS system, providing a modern Linux environment without the need for a separate external device. It is specifically designed to integrate into RISCOSbits FAST ITX systems, occupying minimal space inside the case while adding a complete secondary operating system. At its core is the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, equipped with a 2.4 GHz quad-core processor. The standard configuration includes 4 GB of RAM, with upgrade options available to 8 GB or 16 GB depending on performance requirements. Storage is provided through onboard eMMC—available in 32 GB or 64 GB capacities—and an NVMe slot for high-speed SSD expansion, giving flexibility for both system and data storage. The ECOS 5 connects to the host RISC OS system using an internal network link. This allows the two environments to work together, enabling file sharing, remote desktop access, and the use of Linux-based software directly from the RISC OS desktop. The unit also supports Wi-Fi and wired Ethernet, allowing independent internet access or integration into a wider network without interfering with RISC OS connectivity. Power is supplied directly from the host system’s motherboard, eliminating the need for additional cables or an external power brick. The ECOS 5 operates as a completely independent computer within the case, running continuously in parallel with RISC OS. Users can take advantage of a full Linux software ecosystem—modern web browsers, office suites, media players, development tools, and more—while continuing to run RISC OS for its speed, efficiency, and compatibility with legacy applications. For maintenance or advanced configuration, the ECOS 5 includes debug ports, allowing direct access if needed. Its compact internal design ensures a neat, space-saving installation, with no extra footprint on the desk, while delivering a significant expansion in capability for any RISC OS workstation.
